A patron of the humanities.
While the primary goal of Legacy MP is to help clients create professional legacy videos, the secondary goal is to assist professionals in various areas of the humanities, including film, psychology and journalism.
We offer flexible work arrangements for professionals in various industries to leverage their experience and training in a manner they may not have previously conceived. This could either be supplemental work to your primary vocation or it may serve as your main source of income. The dream is for this company to be a platform for experienced professionals to tap into meaningful and lucrative work when between projects, and for upcoming professionals to obtain stead income while starting their own careers. The hope is this leads to many more professionals having the money and time to create wonderful independent movies, grow their private practice and enhance their brand of journalism.
All positions are continuously open for applications and are available nationwide. Selected individuals will be hired on a temporary basis (i.e. project to project) prior to being offered a permanent position. Permanent employment contracts will be designed to provide a large block of free time each year so the employee is free (and encouraged) to continue to pursue their personal passion.
All positions will work from home, except for when Story Directors and Directors of Photography (with their crew) attend the shooting location.
Story Directors (SDs)
It all starts with the story, and the Story Director is the curator of our clients’ legacies. This is a unique role designed for a new type of industry: private documentaries. The specific tasks include:
Gathering the various stories of the client’s life, including asking thought provoking questions in order to stimulate interesting insights and ideas.
Synthesizing the stories into a comprehensive script, with notations as to when specific home photos, videos and special guests (amongst other things) would be used.
Interviewing the client and any special guests through the shooting of their legacy video. (The SD will not be on camera.)
The primary skills needed to execute this role will include a keen interest in individuals and their personal stories, and the ability to professionally analyze a person’s life with regard to personality traits and context within their society (i.e. time and place). If done well, such analysis may reveal key themes in the client’s life and how they developed or affected them over time. Given this, it should be quite evident why a degree in psychology or journalism would be useful for such roles, though we would also be open to those with a degree in film directing (with a particular focus on documentaries), writing or any other relevant profession we may not yet have considered.
The ability to direct personnel through a photoshoot would be a useful skill, but is not a pre-requisite.
A flat fee will cover approximately five hours of preparation time and two full days of shooting. Extra compensation will be provided for larger projects.
When submitting your application, please makes sure to identify your degree(s) and submit your resume.
Directors of Photography (DPs)
The story may be the focus, but it needs to be captured well. Anyone can put their smartphone on a tripod and say their story. We are looking for professionals who know how to use professional grade cameras (extra credit if you already have your own camera) and know how to set up lighting and sound for nearly any scene.
Feel free to recruit your own crew for each shoot, which may vary depending on the complexity (i.e. some clients may want action shots of various activities). Nevertheless, two extra hands to handle sound and lighting (amongst other activities) would usually be expected.
Familiarity with sourcing equipment is needed. Any rental costs would be covered by the company.
A flat fee will cover two full days of shooting. Extra compensation will be provided for larger or more complex projects.
When submitting your application, please makes sure to identify your degree(s) and some examples of your work.
Editors
Everyone knows the magic happens in post production, which is why we are looking for talented magicians (i.e. editors). Knowledge of how to cut and splice a whole story in a professional manner is needed. Lighting and color correction would be expected, as well as music integration.
Use any software program you prefer.
A flat fee will cover two weeks of work. Extra compensation will be provided for larger or more complex projects.
When submitting your application, please makes sure to identify your degree(s) and some examples of your work.
Music Composers (MCs)
As anyone who has studied film would know, the music carries the story. We are looking for composers with large and unique back catalogues. Compensation will be paid for each use of each piece of work.
It is possible for unique compositions to be requested for a particular scene or even a whole video, though these are expected to be rare due to the cost. Nevertheless, a database of professionals with such skills will be kept for reference whenever such requests arise.
When submitting your application, please makes sure to identify your degree(s) and some examples of your work.
Producers
With the SDs, DPs, MCs and Editors handling their specific roles, there needs to be someone handling all of the other logistics that come with the production of a legacy video. That is what the producer is responsible for. Task would include:
Answering initial questions from prospective clients and making sure someone is assigned for each of the roles (SD, DP, MC and Editor).
Facilitating communication between the various parties (SDs, DPs, MCs and Editors).
Arranging lunch, travel and any other logistics for the shoot.
Handling any other concerns that would not normally be covered by the SD, DP, MC or Editor.
The primary skill needed for this role is general project management, though knowledge of the film industry would be useful. As such, the personal skills needed are reliability and maturity. Reliability is critical, as this person will be responsible for making sure everything runs smoothly. Maturity is critical in how they compose themselves when working with clients and co-workers.
A Head Producer will be available to support each producer and to provide them guidance throughout their projects.
Each producer will be compensated on an hourly rate.
When submitting your application, please makes sure to identify your degree(s) and submit your resume.
